A symbol of Grecian paradise, the famed island of Santorini lies in the heart of the Aegean Sea. Its signature whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches and panoramic cliff edge views have drawn travellers to it for years, contributing to its status as the jewel of the Greek islands. Combine all this with fabulous food, luxurious lodging and – of course – some beautiful beaches, you’ve got the makings of an enchanting island holiday in this glamorous corner of the Mediterranean.

Beaches
Made up from red and black pebbles and sand, Santorini beaches have a lot to offer. The volcanic landscape makes for coarser sand – and the clarity of the seawater is all the better for it. Popular beaches include Perissa, Kamari, Monolithos and the illustrious Red Beach. Aptly named for its opulent copper-toned sands, the Red Beach is regarded by many as the most beautiful stretch of shoreline in Santorini.

Culture
With a landscape that has inspired artists and poets through generations, the island’s rich history infiltrates modern day life. Cycladic architecture birthed the iconic white and blue buildings that infringe Santorini’s caldera, which have become emblematic of Greece. Simply wandering the paved pathways of quaint villages is enough to drink in the culture of the island. However, there’s much to be discovered in the archaeological museums, its five ancient castles and the collection of religious monuments.

Food & Drink
For Santorini specialities, be sure to try the local Brantada fish dish, the spearmint-infused Sfougato quiche and the mouthwatering Tomatokeftdes – otherwise known as tomato fritters – cooked with olive oil, onions and herbs. When it comes to drink, wine is put on a pedestal in these parts. Italian influence oozes into the Vinsanto dessert wine, while the unique and delicious flavours of the dry white wines are largely owed to the island’s volcanic landscape. If beer is more your tipple, try the Crazy Donkey IPA brewed directly on the island.

Nightlife
There are enough clubs and bars in the island capital Fira to keep you entertained for the whole of your holiday. Koo Club and Enigma offer the opportunity to dance the night away, while the coastal resorts of Kamari and Perissa in the east also boast a lively party scene. If you're after a more relaxed evening, head to the beautiful village of Oia. Romantic lounge bars and stunning sunset spots are scattered throughout.

Santorini Weather

Santorini's climate is nothing short of perfect. Summers are hot and dry and winters are mild. You can expect temperatures ranging from 20-30°C and beyond from April through to late September, making this an ideal sun-soaked holiday spot. If you want to catch a last minute deal and avoid the crowds, early autumn is for you. Temperatures are still balmy, but the beaches are much less busy and a laidback vibe takes precedence.

Things To Do on Santorini Holidays

Oia at sunset
Gazing at this spectacular sight has to be one to tick off the bucket list. The picturesque Oia village is at its best when observed at the magic hour of dusk, when locals and tourists alike gather on the ruins of Agios Nikolaos Castle on summer nights to witness the sun edge over the horizon. Whether your viewing platform is accompanied with a bustling atmosphere – or you prefer to privately experience from a table in a local tavern – a sunset from this northwest point is unmissable.

Wine tasting tour
From private tours to large groups, and from daytime to sunset tours – there’s bound to be a way to fit in some wine tasting on your holiday. A great way to experience the culinary connection to the landscape, you can taste the various blends that arise from the volcanic soil. Visit the vineyards, explore the varieties of grape and learn about the local fermenting process. Tours give you the chance to visit several of Santorini’s esteemed wineries – such as Venetsanos, Santo and Gavalas – plus most offer hotel pickup and drop off.

Akrotiri ruins
Truly understanding the origin of the island comes with visiting the ancient Akrotiri ruins. Back in the 17th century BC, a huge volcanic eruption shaped the crater that dominates Santorini’s landscape today, totally preserving the Early Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri. This timeless site is rumoured to be the home of Atlantis and is now known as the Pompeii of the Aegean. We recommend going with a guide so you can make the most of all the history the place has to offer.

Sailing around Santorini
Take a guided tour in a Catamaran to top off your holiday. You’ll see all angles of the volcanic island and discover wonders from dramatic cliff edges to hidden gem bays. Whether you sail in style with a luxury cruise or keep it casual with a chilled-out tour, there’s a perfect pick for any holidaymaker to enjoy. Trust us – no Greek island experience is complete without diving off a boat into the Aegean Sea!
