Overview

Situated off the north-west coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are a holiday paradise for even the most seasoned of sun-seekers. A glorious, all year round climate, picturesque geography and a thriving nightlife make the Canary Islands the perfect destination for everybody- there is always plenty to do!

With all year round sun and fun, the Canary Islands are so diverse in what they can offer you that a Canary Island holiday is a perfect choice for almost everyone! Choose the right island and the right time of year and you will have a dream holiday in the Canary Islands whether you are a family, couple or friends.

On the Beach offers a range of holidays to the four most popular Canarian destinations- Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. But which one is for you?

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has earned its title of "A Continent In Miniature" for its dazzling variety of climates, geographies and vegetation which differ so greatly from one another.

Almost a perfectly round island, the overall appearance and environment changes as you go around the perimeter. At the top of the island lies the main city of Las Palmas, a throbbing, thriving city that is now home to over 400,000 people, almost twice the number of just a couple of decades ago. Situated adjacent to two spectacular beaches, Alcaravaneras and Las Caletas, some tourists simply come to Las Palmas and spend their entire holiday there as it offers a cross section of the best of the magnificent island of Gran Canaria without having to travel around to the other sections.

Halfway down the eastern coast we pass the lovely seaside town of Melenara and reach Gran Canaria Airport, an extremely busy but efficient sky harbour. Heading further south we find the wonders of Playa de Arinaga, which is one of the most peaceful and secluded seashores on Gran Canaria.

All that peace and quiet seems to evaporate as we reach the lively resorts of Playa Del Ingles and Maspalomas. These interlinked resort towns are not truly towns at all; they are a gigantic festival of spectacular beaches, magnificent sea, the world renowned Saharan dunes of Maspalomas and the nonstop action of Playa Del Ingles where you can enjoy fine dining, savour delightful libations, shop at every kind of boutique and store, as well as party all night and well into the night! With so much on offer, it is little wonder why so many people choose to come back on holidays to Gran Canaria year after year!

Tenerife

When it comes to natural beauty, panoramic vistas, superlative attractions and the thoroughly astounding geological wonders of the mighty Mount Teide volcano, the highest peak in Spain, many agree that among all the jewels in the Canarian archipelago's crown, Tenerife is the one that shines the brightest!

By far the most popular with British tourists of all the Canary Islands, thousands flock to Tenerife every year for the fantastic combination of sun, sea and sand!

The variance in climate and vegetation from north to south coast is nothing short of awe inspiring. The south coast is the main tourist area, marked by the magnificent sugar sand beaches of Playa de las Americas and Los Crisitanos set adjacent to craggy hillsides at the foot of the mighty Mount Teide. Yet just a few miles away and you are in the midst of a lush sub-tropical paradise dotted with banana plantations and brightly coloured orchids. The north shore is centered around Puerto De La Cruz, a romantic old Canarian town that lacks a beach but is home to an amazing world renowned saltwater lake complex called Lago De Martianez designed Cesar Manrique.

Fuerteventura

Although Fuerteventura is the second closest island to the Sahara in the Canarian archipelago, it is surprisingly the driest, receiving even less rainfall than bone-dry Lanzarote to the east. Fuerteventura can truly be described as a piece of the Sahara desert tossed into the sea, the infinite fine, white and spectacular beaches testify to this island's Saharan links. The choice of activities available to people on holidays to Fuerteventura are endless.

If you want some education and culture on your holiday in Fuerteventura, visit the Tuineje, Betancuria and Antigua to explore the castles, fortresses, towers and other remains of countless English and Berber pirate raids.

For a more relaxing time, sunbath and swim on a completely isolated enormous beach where you might see no one for miles such as Barlovento, Cofete, or Sotavento Beach. You can also enjoy a championship round of golf on the Elba Palace Golf Resort Hotel's excellent eighteen hole course, visit a thrilling lava cave, relax in any of the fantastic hotels in Fuerteventura, go shopping in any of the island's fascinating designer goods boutiques or original Canarian craftsmanship artisan shops, or attend the re-enactment of the Battle of Tamasite where the local forces, you guessed it, wiped out the British invaders.

One of the main attractions of the island is for its water sports where enthusiasts from all over Europe and the world flock to the endless Fuerteventura beaches to engage in extraordinary scuba diving and snorkelling, world class sailing and windsurfing, magnificent surfing and kiteboarding, and almost any sport you can engage in that requires wind and waves!

Lanzarote

Last, but definitely not least, is Lanzarote, with much of its landscape being described as being lunar or Martian due its moonlike sprinklings of volcanic ash! But don't worry- it's fully equipped with its own share of stunningly white beaches for you to stretch your legs on!

The magical island of Lanzarote is located just 70 miles off the western coast of Africa and is the closest of the Canarian archipelago to the mighty continent. The island is the fourth largest in the chain, measuring 37 miles by 12 miles.

Lanzarote is an arid island with an exceptionally dry and warm climate where the temperature exceeds 20 degrees in every month of the year, even in the middle of winter! With next to no rainfall, you can see why so many people choose to go on holidays to Lanzarote to escape the monotony of life in the UK.

Lanzarote is an island of lunar landscapes, craggy black upthrusts and endless expanses of barren desert so alien that many of the location scenes in The Planet Of The Apes were filmed here. Due to the lack of significant rainfall, erosion is not much of a factor so the landscape remains pretty well identical to the way it was right after the eruptions ceased.

Lanzarote is a wonderland to the tourist who seeks extraordinary beaches and phenomenal windsurfing opportunities. With a huge range of hotels in Lanzarote offering all the sophisticated and modern amenities, facilities and services, this is the ultimate place to dry out and relax in the endless sunshine!

Now it's up to you. Choose your island, board and accommodation, and book with On the Beach! Paradise is only four hours away!

Landscape

All of the Canary Islands have diverse landscape, ranging from the long, exquisite beaches of Fuerteventura, all the way to the volcanic mountain ranges which cut through the centre of Tenerife. Indeed, Tenerife offers the unique experience of sunbathing whilst enjoying the breathtaking snow-capped mountains in the distance!

The Canary Islands' fantastic natural geography comes as a result of volcanic activity - they are in fact volcanic islands. However, today, the Canarian volcanoes are dormant, meaning an eruption is not something you need to pack for! So whichever island you choose, prepare to experience some of the finest scenery that any holiday will ever have to offer- book your picture perfect holiday with On the Beach today!

Things To Do on Canaries Holidays

There are hundreds of things to do on the Canary Islands. You'll be spoilt for choice. What ever you're looking for you'll find it here; nightlife, restaurants, beaches, nature, sport, history, wildlife, culture, and much more.

Culture

The Canary Islands' original inhabitants hailed from neighbouring Africa, with cave paintings courtesy of this civilisation still preserved today. The luscious landscape of the islands was a perfect canvas for agricultural cultivation, allowing inhabitants to provide for themselves and live self-sufficiently. However, this capability for successful farming attracted foreign interest, and in the 15th century the islands were invaded by the Spanish, who used the islands for trading of both sugar cane and wine. More recently, the Canaries were subject to the regime and occupation of General Franco, and since his death have applied democracy across the islands. Today, the islands are ruled by the Canarian Coalition.

Nightlife

Party resorts such as Playa del Ingles in Southern Gran Canaria and Playa de las Americas in South Tenerife have long been the favourite haunts of young holidaymakers looking for nightlife, sun and fun at a budget price. These two Canary Islands resorts remain the top two party locations on the Canaries, with enough bars, clubs, restaurants, watersports, beach lounging and holiday resort attractions to please the hardest playing partygoers!
