Egypt Weather

Split into two seasons, summer and winter, Egypt has no time for autumn and spring.

Scorching hot in July and August, with temperatures soaring into the 40s even after dark, the humidity remains persistently high in the mid 20s, so make sure you invest in an air conditioning unit if it doesn't already come with the room when you book your hotel in Egypt. Even November stays in the 20s whilst sand storms and hot spring winds mix up the climate between March and April. One things for sure - Egypt holidays are always hot!

The wettest weather (if you can call 200 millimetres of precipitation wet!) is found around the city of Alexandria, while some areas south of Cairo can go years without seeing a drop of rain - so don't worry if you leave your brolly in Britain!

Landscape

Divided into four geographical areas – the Nile Valley and Delta, Western Desert, Eastern Desert and Sinai Peninsula - it doesn't take a genius to work out that Egypt's landscape consists mainly of sandy deserts, mountains, lakes and territorial waters.

Running the length of Egypt, the north-flowing Nile (and the longest river in the world), doesn't just make a worthy spectacle- you can make light work of travelling between different destinations on their numerous ferry trips.

Things To Do on Egypt Holidays

Whether you opt for a history-filled fortnight or a beach side activity break, you can choose the type of holiday you want in Egypt by the water you set up camp by. Whilst the Nile provides the perfect starting point to discover pyramids, temples, monasteries and mummies; the Red Sea and its beautiful beaches will keep water-babies and budding snorkelers occupied 'til their heart's content. If it's diving holidays you're looking for, Sharm is the place to go.

With the Nile as your tour guide, you'll be able to explore all the well-known sights - the Valley of the Kings (home to the tomb of Tutankhamen), the Temple of Karnak and the Avenue of the Sphinx. And if you're still keen to swot up on the age-old traditions of tomb life, why not head to Egypt's Mummification museum in magical Luxor where you can learn all about the fascinating process of embalming.

Alternatively, if it's the beach that's calling your name, make sure you get acquainted with the Red Sea and beautiful Sharm El Sheikh beach. One of our top ten beaches, it is famous for its crystal clear waters, golden sands, water sports, and the diving schools dotted between each and every bay, giving you the opportunity to brush up on your underwater skills.

Culture

Nothing but accommodating, Islam is the main religion in Egypt with the remainder being Coptic Christians (Christian Egyptians). This means that most Muslims in Egypt still don't drink and visit Mosques regularly, but they have no objection to tourists drinking, and they'll welcome you into the mosques open armed. In fact all famous and major mosques are open to visitors, except when services are taking place (Fridays at noon). Just remember to remove your shoes and cover bare arms if you don't want to offend the locals.

Although most Egyptians speak Arabic as their first language, English has become widely-spoken as a result of the roaring tourist trade. The only places you might need to arm yourself with a phrase book whilst on holiday in Egypt is if you decide to visit the more rural areas, or dine out in Egyptian-owned eateries as staff won't be expected to be bi-lingual.

Elsewhere, in the larger cities, you'll still be greeted by all the large conglomerate fast-food chains accommodating for various different food preferences and cultures – British, Italian, Mexican etc, but if you are looking to sample a signature Egyptian dish, expect lots of fresh vegetables, rice, bread and Meze. Closely linked to North African cuisine, dishes will be lighter on meat but won't lack on taste thanks to the rich local spices the food is infused with.

Nightlife

Even when it gets too dark to dive or sunbathe, the waterfronts are where you'll want to stay positioned if you're looking for a good time on your Egypt holiday. From the Nile-fronted cities of Cairo and Luxor, the Red Sea settlements of Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh, to the Mediterranean Sea metropolis of Alexandria, you can mingle with the locals and street-vendors or meet like-minded travellers and tourists in the pubs, clubs and bars that line the main strips.

Or, if it's family-friendly activities you're searching for, why not book a trip to see one of Egypt's electrifying sound and light shows – we haven't found anyone who hasn't been impressed by a spot-lit Sphinx yet!
