Which cocktail matches your favourite holiday destination?

The pubs might be open but we’re certainly missing the sunshine. We’ve all been dreaming of the next time we can step onto a sandy bay and take in the views of the sparkling sea, softly crashing onto the shore. For now though, we just need to do all we can to enjoy the holiday feeling from home, and nothing gives us that sunny feeling more than a fruity cocktail that you’d usually be found sipping on a beach far, far away…

So, in honour of World Cocktail Day on 13th May, we’ve put together a collection of cocktail recipes that match your favourite holiday destinations, so you can enjoy a little sip of sunshine at home.

Starting strong with Spain, if you’re missing the Spanish sunshine and the sandy Costas that we all know and love, then we’ve got the tipple for you. Can you guess it? Of course, it’s sangria! This fruity favourite will transport you to your favourite Spanish beach instantly, so dig out your jug and mix up some sangria to share the sunny feeling with a loved one or some friends! Add ice, chopped fruit (we like oranges, apples and lemons), a bottle of Spanish red wine, 1/3 cup of brandy, a tablespoon of sugar syrup (or more if you prefer it sweeter) and 3/4 cup of orange juice to top up the jug. Some people also add in a cinnamon stick too, but we’ll leave that up to you. Give it a mix, leave it to chill in the fridge for extra flavour and then enjoy!

Gorgeous Greece, oh how we’ve missed it! Whether you’re an island hopper or you’re in love with the mainland, Greece has so much beauty that only a stunning drink could match it. Of course, if Greece is your favouorite destination, then you’ll know the nation’s popular spirit Ouzo. Well, here we have for you an Ouzotini – 30ml of Ouzo, 30ml of vodka, 30ml of peach schnapps and 15ml of lime juice in a shaker with ice, add in 6 mint leaves and give it a good shake. Serve this in a sugar-rimmed martini glass and you’ve got a glass of Greek goodness to take you back to sunnier times.

If Jamaica is your favourite holiday destination, we really don’t blame you. The pristine beaches and laid-back island life will make anyone want to stay forever. Throw in the fact that Jamaican food is some of the tastiest in the world and the Caribbean sunshine is, well, unbeatable – there’s no wonder it’s known as a dream destination. Of course, there’s not a better cocktail to match Jamaica than…. rum punch! A famous refreshment in the Caribbean islands, rum punch is made up of 250ml white rum, 150ml of dark/coconut rum, 200ml of grenadine, 250ml pineapple juice, 250ml of orange juice, 100ml of fresh line juice and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix these into a large jug and add a dash of angostura bitters, as well as some slices of orange, lemon and lime, and pour over ice to serve. You’ll soon be feeling the warmth of the Caribbean sun with this tropical tipple!

Who doesn’t love Portugal? Whether you’re a regular on the amazing beaches of the Algarve or your favourite sun-soaked capital city is Lisbon, there’s no beating a holiday to the Portuguese coast. If you’re missing Portugal’s sunshine, then we have the cocktail for you. A perfectly refreshing drink that can be enjoyed on the beach, by the pool or… in your own home – the caipiroska is a winner! Fresh and simple, all you need to do is add crushed ice, 45ml of vodka, 20ml of sugar syrup and 4 wedges of lime into a glass, muddle it until you see the lime juice squeezing out of the wedges and then top up with more crushed ice. Easy peasy!

The way the Mexican sun beams down on the soft, white sand and glistens on the warm waters is a dream come true, isn’t it? You might love plush five-star stays in Playa del Carmen, relaxing retreats along the Riviera Maya or exciting getaways to the city that meets the Caribbean shore in Cancun. Whichever magnificent Mexican destination it is that you’re longing to return to, we can help give you a little taste of it for now with a fresh and fruity mango daquiri! Want to make it for 4? Pop 4 martini glasses in the fridge to chill and add 1 large ripe (peeled and pitted) mango to a blender with 90ml of white rum, 2 tablespoons of sugar syrup, 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice and 1 cup of crushed ice. Blend this until smooth and serve in your chilled glasses with a sliced strawberry as garnish and you won’t be disappointed.

The stunning Turquoise Coast attracts holidaymakers from around the world year after year, with its beautiful beaches, outstanding hotels, friendly locals and the long-lasting warmth of the Turkish sun. There’s so much to love about Turkey, including the delicious food and delightful drinks. When in Turkey, there’s no doubt you’ll come across their much-loved spirit Raki, so we thought it would be rude not to match Turkey with a Raki-filled cocktail to transport you back to Turkish shores. This pomegranate and lemon raki cocktail is a Turkish treat for you to enjoy with your feet up at home. So, grab yourself a glass with ice, add 60ml of raki, 60ml of pure pomegranate juice and top with lemon and lime soda. Give it a stir and garnish with mint leaves and a slice of lemon for decoration – ┼čerefe (cheers)!

If you love to live the life of luxury in Dubai, you’ll know there are some deluxe drinks to choose from when it comes to cocktails. The year-round heat, amazing day parties and bottomless brunches of Dubai might not be within reach at the moment, but we’re here to give you the simple yet sophisticated thirst-quencher that will make you feel fancy, even if you’re just in your front room. The Hendricks lemonade is light and luxurious, everything you need whilst dreaming of Dubai’s sunny skies. To make it, you’ll need a tall glass with ice, then add in 50ml of Hendricks gin, 20ml of lemon juice, 20ml of sugar syrup and top it with soda water. Thinly slice some cucumber and place these on top for the finishing touch. It’s a refreshment fit for royalty.

Last but definitely not least, we have Cuba! Home to the incredible city of Havana and some of the prettiest beaches on the planet, Cuba is the Caribbean island filled with magical adventures. And what matches the magic of Cuba more than a minty mojito? It’s fresh and delicious yet it’s simple enough to make at home. All you’ll need to do is combine 30ml of lime juice, a teaspoon of sugar and 5 mint leaves in a glass and muddle it until the sugar has dissolved. Add 60ml of rum, give it a good mix and then pour it into a glass filled with crushed ice. It truly is a 10/10 tipple if you ask us!

Cocktails are delicious, but they definitely taste better on the beach – start planning your 2022 holiday today!
