Barbados: 27°C
We couldn’t have a hot holiday countdown without the Caribbean – and beautiful Barbados tops the lot, with the mercury sometimes hitting a sizzling 31°C. The sheltered west coast is home to some of the world’s best beaches, from the postcard-perfect Crane Beach to the forest-fringed Batts Rock Bay – and as May falls during the island’s dry season, you’re sure to enjoy plenty more sunshine than showers.
We recommend: For unbeatable value and a stunning beachfront setting, the Butterfly Beach is a real budget-friendly pick. Families also flock to the Almond Beach, famed for its fab All Inclusive service – and for a true taste of island life, the Waves Beach’s water taxi lets you resort-hop between seven luxury hotels.

Cyprus: 21°C
At almost twice as warm as Blighty, charming Cyprus is perfect for spring sunseekers. If you fancy a spot of flop ‘n’ drop, the beaches are super-chilled at this time of year – and to pick up the pace, May is full of events galore, from Limassol’s street art and flower fairs, to Nicosia’s fabulously frothy Full Pint beer festival.
We recommend: For a real get-away-from-it-all break, Club Aphrodite’s sparkling pool and lush gardens were just made for R&R. Heading east, the Cavo Maris Beach offers some of the most jaw-dropping sea views on the island – and for five-star family fun, the luxurious King Evelthon boasts six pools and two colourful splash parks.
Lanzarote: 21°C
Luscious Lanzarote is great for a May escape, with sub-tropical sunshine a mere four-hour flight away. If you like your holidays laid-back, head to Playa Blanca in the south – its hideaway beaches are sure to be whisper-quiet. To turn up the volume, lively Puerto del Carmen is a prime pick – and in easy-going Costa Teguise, the award-winning Rancho Texas Park is open all year round.
We recommend: The superb Sandos Papagayo Beach is Playa Blanca’s shining star, with mouth-watering dining and endless entertainment for all ages. Plus, tiny travellers are sure to love the Galeon Playa’s swashbuckling pirate activities – and for self-catering with bags of style, the chilled-out Costa Sal has got you covered.
Ibiza: 18°C
The White Isle might be best known for its world-class clubs – but at a teeny-tiny two hours away, it’s perfect for a half-term hop with the kids, too. Resorts such as Es Cana and Cala Llonga are great for little ones, with sheltered sands and family-friendly dining aplenty. Plus, couples, mates and music fans love the buzz of San Antonio and Ibiza Town – and as the nightlife scene is just warming up, late May’s great for clubbing without the crowds.
We recommend: The newly-refurbished Alua Miami Ibiza is a firm fave with families, and is perched right by a picture-perfect beach. Plus, the Ole Galeon boasts unbelievable sea views – and for the ultimate party paradise, it has to be the legendary Ibiza Rocks.
