When do you start your holiday countdown?

If you’ve got your holiday booked for the summer, you’re probably getting excited and looking forward to some much-needed sun!

To make sure you have a relaxing time, we’ve come up with some top tips to help you get prepared and in the spirit:

Check your passport

This information was correct at the time of writing – for the most up-to-date passport information, please see our FAQs page.

If you’re anything like us, you only take a proper look at your passport when you’re about to check in at the airport – and even then it’s just to giggle at our old photos! Our advice is to check it well before booking a holiday, though, to make sure it’s still in date. You can order a new passport up to nine months before your current one expires, and should expect to wait a minimum of three weeks for your replacement to arrive.

Book airport transfers
If you haven’t booked a transfer from the airport to your hotel it is worth doing to save you lots of time and money! If you haven’t already booked your transfers, you can do here: http://www.onthebeachtransfers.co.uk/

Special requirements
Make sure you let both your travel agent and airline know if you require wheelchair access/assistance or have special dietary requirements to make sure you’re looked after.

Currency
It’s easy to get your currency at the airport, but you probably won’t get the best rates. By shopping around before you travel, you’ll be able to find the best rate and beat the rush! Make sure you ask for some coins with your currency, too, which is ideal for tipping if you’re travelling to destinations like Egypt or Turkey.

Mobile phones and credit cards
Double check costs for texting and calling while abroad so that you don’t get the shock of a lifetime when you get your next bill! Most networks allow you to apply ‘boltons’ which mean you can make calls without it costing as much, so check that out! You should also notify your bank that you’re going abroad and check what additional charges you may incur for using your card or withdrawing cash.

Book!
If there’s an activity or day trip you’re particularly looking forward to on holiday, research it beforehand and see if you can book online. You may be able to save money and you’ll avoid missing out if the trip is very popular.

Stock up on essentials
Essentials like sun cream, insect repellent and travel plugs can be expensive during holiday season, so shop around now to see if you can find special deals and 3 for 2 offers. If you’re travelling with hand luggage, make sure you check their baggage allowance and how much liquid you can take with you. If you have decided to only take hand luggage (which is a great money saver) but be sure to make sure your liquids aren’t over 100ml.

Start a holiday folder
Booking a family holiday can mean a lot of paperwork! With booking confirmations, boarding passes and passports it’s easy to misplace things. Buy a folder to keep all your important paperwork in, so that you have everything you need to hand as you need it!
