Tourism on the increase in Gran Canaria, report On the Beach

Tourism numbers jump by 11.1% in 2011 with further growth predicted for 2012

According to Aena, the fourth largest air navigation service in Europe, holidays to Gran Canaria jumped by 11.1% in 2011 as 10.5 million passengers flocked to the sun-drenched Canary Isle. This growth in tourist numbers is expected to continue and even increase further in 2012 thanks to a weak Euro and the popularity of the region as a year round destination for beach holidays. There has already been a 10% increase in bookings for next winter season fuelled by the recognition the islands garnered this winter.

The island’s appeal has now been recognised by more than just sun-hungry tourists. On 27 September 2012, the beach of Maspalomas along Gran Canaria’s southern coast has been selected by the World Tourism Organisation as the location for World Tourism Day. It will be the first time Spain has ever hosted the event, so this is a big occasion for Gran Canaria and Spain as a whole. According to Mr Bravo de Laguna, the president of Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the celebration will “enable Maspalomas to be known in all corners of the planet”.

On the Beach offers holidaymakers the full freedom and flexibility of choosing their own flight and hotel based on their needs and budget, but still offers piece of mind, as it is a member of ABTA. In this way the online travel agent is able to carry over 750,000 passengers every single year. As the name suggests, On the Beach specialises in beach holidays and offers great deals on holidays to Gran Canaria thanks to its wide selection of hotels on the island. It even offers free kids places at selected hotels. So it’s the perfect choice for holidays to Gran Canaria to coincide with World Tourism Day or to ride the wave of the island’s huge successes in 2011.

Thanks to an enviable climate of hot summers, warm winters and seemingly endless hours of sunshine, Gran Canaria and all the Canary Islands for that matter, will be basking in sunshine on World Tourism Day in September and being outside the main school holidays, travel and accommodation prices will be particularly appealing at this time.
