Start planning your 2021 getaway

Next year has a lot of making up to do, but some sun, sand and sea could be on the cards for 2021. If you’ve found yourself daydreaming about the gentle lull of overseas destinations and plush sandy beachfronts over the last few months, then it might be time to start putting those plans in motion. If you book early then not only can you minimise stress and have something to look forward to, but it means that you’ll have plenty of time to get prepped and avoid the dreaded last-minute dash – plus you’ll get first pick of your favourite destinations, so you can plan the break that you want. Can’t decide where to go? Look no further. We’ve compiled some crowd-pleasing favourites and some lesser-known picks to give you all the travel inspiration you need…

Whether it’s the magical mainland or the idyllic islands that pepper the coast, Greece is just brimming with swathes of golden sands, crescent coves and breezy promenades. The whitewashed villages make for a gorgeous backdrop, and with charming cafés and waterfront eateries serving up charred souvlaki, warm pita, crunchy salads and courgette fritters with lashings of tzatziki, one thing’s for sure – Greek getaways are made for eating to your heart’s content. There’s more than just swoon-worthy scenery to capture your attention, though – from traditional hotels to luxury resorts, your dream beach break could be just a flight away, and the perfect addition to your 2021.

Framed by the breathtaking Aegean coastline with its blissful beachfronts and sloping shorelines, Turkey holidays are where sun-seekers unite. Home to the Turkish Riviera, or the appropriately named Turquoise Coast with its vivid hue and halos of pine forests, Turkey’s enchantingly vibrant landscapes are just one of the many draws that keep tourists coming back year after year. Meander through Marmaris for a colourful night scene, pick an extravagant hotel in Antalya for thrilling water rides, ice cream and relaxing Hammam all on your doorstep, or explore the likes of Olu Deniz and Bodrum for intricate architecture and unforgettable boat trips along winding rivers – whatever you fancy, Turkey has more than a few tricks up its sleeve.

The Canary Islands

Drenched in year-round sunshine with a sensational stretch of coast, we couldn’t pick just one of these islands, so it seemed only fitting to give them all a mention. The Canaries refers to those much-loved Spanish favourites, including Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, with their inky landscapes, crests of mountains and turquoise waters. From hiking up Mount Teide in Tenerife to dabbling in some wind-fuelled watersports in Lanzarote or stretching out along the golden, palm-fringed sands of Fuerteventura, when it comes to holidays in the Canaries, the opportunities are truly endless. Shallow waters create a great child-friendly setting for that all-important family getaway, whilst the colourfully quaint towns and winding walkways are an adventure waiting to happen.

Dubrovnik, with its historic heart and centuries-old walls, is what gives Croatia its reputation of rich culture, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t lay down a towel and enjoy every ounce of golden coastline. Croatia’s landscape is a tapestry of dense green forests, historical buildings, charming horseshoe bays and national parks blanketed in green. By day, you can dine in swanky restaurants serving black risotto (coloured with squid ink), stuffed flatbreads and hearty bean stew, and by night you can unwind with a cocktail or three in one of the elegant seafront bars. You’ll also find clusters of tiny islands sprinkled along the coast, some of which are car-free areas, so if the hustle and bustle feels a little too much then true peace and quiet is only ever a ferry-ride away. Whether you’re seeking a culture trip or a bucket-and-spade beach break, Croatia could be just what you need for a sunny escape in 2021.

Feeling tropical? Think dreamy Caribbean seascapes, sandy peninsulas, jungle-clad landscapes and gorgeous hotels that ooze luxury; that paints a picture of just some of Mexico’s highlights. Cancun is the holiday hotspot that has it all – from a buzzing night scene to the famous Underwater Museum of Art and vibrant family-friendly resorts. If that doesn’t take your fancy then you can soak up your surroundings in the likes of Playa del Carmen or Riviera Maya with their powder-white sands, coral reefs and crystal-clear waters just begging to be explored – snorkel optional. Whether you’re itching to dive head-first into a fun-filled adventure, or you simply want to stretch out under the beaming sunshine, why not make your way to Mexico in 2021?
