When you think of St. Patrick’s Day, images of Guinness, daft green hats and general boozy camaraderie down your local pub are the usual things that pop to mind. The hot, sunny weather and stunning sandy beaches of Lanzarote couldn’t really be further away from our ideas of this holiday… BUT, despite this, thousands of tourists flock to the picturesque beaches of Puerto Del Carmen to celebrate the Irish holiday.
St. Patrick’s Day in Lanzarote? But why?
Irish tourism in Lanzarote is extremely high – around 400,000 Irish tourists visit the island every year! There’s also a sizeable group of Irish expats, many of which have opened their own Irish pubs in the Puerto Del Carmen area. Naturally, Lanzarote is the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day.
Diving for Clovers
Every year, thousands of green clad tourists take to the streets to experience the amazing parade which has the theme ‘be Irish for the day’. The activities last all weekend including a search for a lucky clover in the wonderful seabed of Playa Chica Beach (one of the top destinations in Europe for scuba diving).
5km Beer Run
As well as this, a 5km beer run has been organised in previous years with a St Patrick’s Day twist – a fun run with Irish or Celtic themed fancy dress. There was even a beer aid station on the course as well as at the finish line! The celebration culminated in mass at the Church of Carmen, followed by a boat trip from the old harbour.
