NEWS: Spain named the best holiday destination

We recently conducted a survey of 1,000 sun-seeking Brits to find out what destination is thought of as the best place to go on holiday and why. The results are in…

Top 3 holiday destinations

  1. Spain – 19%
  2. Italy – 15%
  3. France – 9%

It’s hardly surprising that Spain came in at the top of the ‘best overall’ category gaining 19% of the vote. Italy came a close second with 15%, whilst France, traditionally the world’s most popular holiday destination only came in third place in this survey with 9% of the vote – even though it continues to receive the most visitors to its shores each year!

  1. Spain – 25%
  2. Greece – 8%
  3. France – 7%

Now this one is hardly surprising. Spain can boast popular nightlife locations such as Ibiza, Malaga, Marbella and Magaluf bringing it to position one on nights out. Greece, with Zante, Kavos and Mykonos to its name comes in second with France not far behind.

Top 3 destinations for the best beaches

  1. Spain – 23%
  2. Greece – 14%
  3. Algarve – 10%

This one’s a biggie for us. As the beach holiday experts, we believe that having a good beach goes a long way. The survey found that Spain’s beaches were the favourite by a clear majority, even when the Algarve is home to more than 80 Blue Flag beaches!

Italian Food

Top 3 destinations for the best food

  1. Italy – 25%
  2. Spain – 12%
  3. France – 11%

Spain missed out on the top spot here, with Italy taking the reins with 25%. Known for staples such as pizza, pasta and lovely coffee, Italy gained more than double the votes of Spain. Spanish fare and French cuisine wasn’t too far off though… paella or baked camembert anyone?

Do you agree with our findings? Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach comments:

“Spain really is the big winner in the survey, hitting the top spot in all but one category. Spain is set to welcome more holidaymakers than ever before this year but for those looking to experience something different, Greece and the Algarve offer some of the best resorts in Europe.”
