Malta Pride 2018

As Malta Pride 2018 approaches on the 15th September, we’re getting pretty excited about the nation’s celebrations. With Malta taking the top mark of the Rainbow Index for the third year, we’ve put together a little guide about the most LGBTQI+ friendly country in Europe and its plans for the big day.

The Rainbow Index

The Rainbow Index is an annual ranking of the 49 European countries on a percentage scale of how LGBTQI+ friendly each nation is. This is based on the laws and policies that affect the community’s human rights and is a way to view Europe’s developments country by country.

For the third year running, Malta has topped the Rainbow Index with a score of 91% (100% being full respect of human rights and equality). This is definitely something to shout about, but why is Malta the top ranker?

In the past few years, the Government have made developments to further integrate the LGBTQI+ community, by passing laws to stop discrimination, introducing the X gender on official personal documentation and by legalising same-sex marriage. Plus the Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, has expressed his aspiration to do even better. Way to go Malta!

The history of Malta Pride

Malta’s first Pride March was in 2004, when activists marched the streets for the equal treatment for the LGBT community. These marches were continued from then on with themes such as ‘Live, Love, Be’, ‘Dignity in Diversity’ and ‘Rights Now!’. When the Civil Unions Act was passed in 2014, Malta Pride began its gradual transition from activist marches to extravagant celebrations of the LGBT community, bringing the nation together as one.

What’s on for 2018

Although the official date of Malta Pride this year is 15th September, the celebrations begin on 9th September and end on 16th, offering a whole week of activities. Get your groove on at the boat party, pool party, march, concert and official S2S Pride Party! Sporty types can get stuck into the beach volleyball and football tournaments, or if you are more of an entertainer, there is a fantastic Drag Lip Sync Battle and a Queer Open Mic Night.

Aside from the all singing, all dancing extravaganza, Malta Pride also features events that tackle important issues and help those in the LGBTIQ+ community who need a little extra support. These events include the Community Discussion about politics at pride, the tackling of issues with mental health in the community and the Rainbow Family Network Meeting, helping families with LGBTIQ+ parents and children. These gatherings are more than important for the constant progression of the community, and for the care of the people.
