The proposal to add a third runway at Heathrow airport has been included in a list of options to increase capacity. The airport is to investigate whether this is a more favourable option among local communities than their original plan to extend their Northern runway.
Due to alternating landing patterns, residents have some periods of respite where they are not disturbed by planes overhead, and the introduction of a third runway will ultimately lengthen these intervals of peace and quiet.
Despite this, the new addition to the airport would be located to the northwest of its existing site and would therefore expose new communities to jet noise as they would reside directly under new flight paths.
