October is the hero of holiday seasons. The crowds have died down, there’s more chance to relax and (relatively) no chance of burning. You’ll likely get the beaches to yourself and what’s more – the sea has been warmed by the sun all summer long – so water temperatures are ideal for young ones. We’ve pulled together our top European and long haul beach destinations to take the family on this October half term. Find your favourite below!
Tenerife, Canary Islands
October temperatures comfortably hover around the low to mid-20s (°C), so it’s perfect for combining down time at the beach with some exploration. Take to the shallow waters of Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos in the south of the island, where the sea will be warmest and many sheltered coves provide calm waters – perfect for paddling. All ages will appreciate the splashtastic Siam Park and the Loro Parque zoo.
Where to stay: Costa Adeje Gran Hotel
This hotel is our favourite pick due to its All Inclusive schedule, kids’ club, mini disco and five-star facilities.
Antalya, Turkey
Boasting entire resorts dedicated to kid-friendly fun, it’s no surprise Antalya makes it on the list. With aqua parks galore, endless stretches of white sandy beaches and even an impressive Dinopark on offer, children both young and old won’t be short of things to do. There’s even Sandland, where hundreds of sand sculptures are on display each year, with 2018 having the theme of “legends”. Older kids will be able to appreciate the artistic culture of the event, while little ones can enjoy the on-site playground.
Where to stay: Eftalia Ocean
New for 2017, head here for a splashtastic choice of aqua parks and its rejuvenating spa.
Rhodes, Greece
Rhodes provides the perfect mix of relaxation and culture. Explore the history draped around the island, then cool off on one of its many Blue Flag sandy beaches. Medieval castles, the classic Acropolis plus one of the seven wonders of the ancient world – the Colossus of Rhodes – make for a healthy dose of cultural education. Then a well-deserved stint at a choice of beaches is on the menu. From small coves boasting shallow warm waters, to lengthy stretches of shoreline stocked with family-friendly facilities, there’s something for all to enjoy.
Where to stay: Labranda Blue Bay Beach & Water Park
Just steps from the beach, children will stay active on site with the mini club, kids’ pool and playground.
Algarve, Portugal
For families seeking activity and some of Europe’s wilder but more scenic stretches of coastline, the Algarve is an ideal pick. From Albufeira to Lagos, the golden shores are popular with all holidaymakers, yet are particularly partial to family-focused trips. Plenty of Blue Flag beaches and waterparks line the coast, while many hotels cater to the enjoyment of younger guests. Plus, as one of the sunniest countries in Europe, you can still expect hours of uninterrupted sunshine throughout October.
Where to stay: Monica Isabel Beach Club
Located by the shores of Alemães Beach, guests can enjoy family-friendly activities including mini golf, a range of pools and a kids’ club.
Orlando, USA
For a long haul October escape like no other, Orlando has to be one to tick off the bucket list. Kids (and kids at heart) take centre stage in the Disney capital. Autumn is one of the best times to visit, as Florida sees temperatures drift around the bearable range of 20-28°C. Exploring the variety of amazing theme parks will make for an awe-inspiring holiday for all the family, plus the drop in humidity and crowd levels is sure to keep mum and dad relaxed!
Where to stay: Disney’s Boardwalk Inn
Guests old and young will love this Disney-inspired resort, located close to the Animal Kingdom and other theme parks.
Dubai, UAE
An alternative long haul pick, Dubai is the decadent icing on the cake when it comes to family holidays. Yet, despite its glitz and glamour, there are many affordable options for families with children, particularly out of high season. Kids can marvel at the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa, immerse themselves in the amusement centre Kidzania, let loose in Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark and even swim with dolphins at Dolphin Bay. What’s more, the beaches boast warm aquamarine waters and fine white sands that are furnished with eateries, play areas, on-duty lifeguards and fabulous views of the Dubai skyline. Meanwhile, the rolling sand dunes of the desert offer plenty of active respite for thrill-seeking families!
