Do Brits abroad stand out?

Ever felt like you stick out like a sore thumb when on holiday? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! According to a recent survey, Brits are the most identifiable as tourists when holidaying abroad.

Is it our clothes? Our noticeable tan lines? Our love of tea? Who knows… but it turns out that us Brits come top, beating the apparently recognisable Germans, Italians and French.

Whilst two thirds of people surveyed claimed that standing out from the locals doesn’t bother them on holiday, 25% of Brits abroad are concerned that they may appear disrespectful to other cultures if they look like a tourist.

Another concern brought to light by the survey is that looking like a tourist may mean being over-charged as it is assumed you don’t know standard costs of the country. A massive 30% of people said they believe they pay on average 23% more than locals.

To tackle this issue, 42% of people make a conscious effort to learn the basics of the local language, dine in local restaurants, avoid busy tourist areas, and dress for the culture. Almost a third of Brits claim they enjoy blending in with the local culture as this gives them a more authentic travel experience.
