Billions spent on unwanted gifts

A recent survey has revealed that £5bn is spent on unwanted gifts by holidaymakers, with many even ending up in the bin.

Out of the 2000 people asked, ornaments were the most unwanted gift with 14% and comedy t-shirts and cheap jewellery coming a joint second with 9%. Key-rings and fridge magnets received 7%, whilst food, snow globes and fake DVDs received 4% of the vote each.

More than two thirds of recipients said they didn’t really appreciate the gifts and 15% said they chucked it in the bin as soon as they received it. But these don’t come cheap, with more than eight in ten holidaymakers spending an average of £23 on unwanted gifts, 14% spent more than £40 and an astonishing 9% have splashed out more than £50 on trinkets, for others.

It’s a nice idea to bring back gifts for loved ones, but it seems we are making the wrong decisions on the items we pick, with many ending up in the bin. This survey reveals massive amounts of money is being wasted and really, it would be better spent on treating ourselves at the bar or on excursions.
