If you’ve ever travelled with kids, you may have found yourself wondering where the best European beaches for families are. And with most of the Mediterranean’s sizzling shores less than a 5-hour flight away, the beaches of Europe are perfect for families looking to enjoy a short-haul escape.

As the UK’s experts on all things beachy, we surveyed 1,000 people to find out the nation’s top picks for a European beach break once and for all. So, without further ado, here are your top five European beach destinations, as chosen by you….

5. Gran Canaria

Coming in at an honourable 5th place, the sleepy island of Gran Canaria remains a firm favourite with British families in need of some Vitamin Sea. Take the kids for a ride around the iconic sand dunes or get the adrenaline pumping by sliding into a day of fun at one of the island’s splashtastic waterparks.

4. Algarve

Enjoying a toasty Mediterranean climate on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the beautiful Portuguese region known as the Algarve has been voted your 4th favourite beach destination for families thanks to its abundance of picture-perfect beaches and laid-back atmosphere.

3. Costa del Sol

Where would this list be without one of the Spanish Costas? Whether you’re one of the first Spanish beach babies from the 60s or a pasty millennial looking to sun yourself closer to home, the Costa del Sol is sitting pretty in 3rd place. Fuengirola fans can take advantage of the fabulous floating waterpark, Costa Water Park, located right on the beachfront.

And finally, your number one… It’s the one and only Canary Island of Tenerife!
