Beaches, bars and a side of history in Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the most historic and cultural islands in Greece, just four and a half hours’ flight from the UK. Among the breathtaking architecture you’ll find a plethora of resorts to choose from, including young and lively, family-friendly and luxurious.

Here, the harbour is a good place to start. You can’t miss the harbour gates where a statue of the Greek God Helios once stood at 30m tall. Dating back to 280BC it was considered one of the ancient wonders of the world until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 220BC.

Just a short stroll from here you will find yourself in the old town which is still enclosed by its medieval walls. It’s really like stepping back in time and is a wonderful place to buy those little trinkets for people at home. Weave through the narrow cobbled streets and discover a little gem of a cafe or handmade pottery stall where the owner will invite you in to browse and even try a drink of local liquor if you’re lucky!

Staying with history and culture but moving on to my favourite of all resorts in Rhodes, you will find Lindos. This is the most beautiful and picturesque village, not only offering spectacular beaches nestled away in little coves but its very own piece of history – The Acropolis.

The Acropolis is only accessible by an old road that just oozes ancient Greece. Either set off on foot or take a donkey up to the top, both of which will take you up above breathtaking views and make you feel at one with the planet. My advice would be to visit this amazing piece of history first thing in the morning before the heat gets unbearable (I found this out the hard way!)

One of the many great things about Lindos is that it is still is an old- fashioned Greek village which has not had its head turned by powerful resort hotels. It is very much a quaint old town with narrow cobbled streets and friendly shop owners. It has a personal feel about the place with genuine Greek hospitality which is echoed by the bars and restaurants that line the cobbled streets.
