After a survey showed that 51% of airline travellers said they were less likely to trust a female pilot, British Airways have recently pushed for more female applicants. Of the people surveyed, only 14% said they would feel more comfortable with a female pilot, with the majority claiming that male pilots would be more skilled.
So where does this mistrust come from? We all know the stereotype about women drivers, but surely this can’t extend to something like piloting? Despite the fact that British Airways have more female pilots than any other carrier in the UK, male pilots still outnumber their female counterparts 18 to 1 (3,500 male pilots to around 200 females, respectively).
