11 things you need to know about Turkey

Turkey is full of new sights, sounds and cultures, whether you see it from the bustling bazaars or from your towel, stretched out on a sandy beach.

If you’re heading there on holiday, we’re picked some facts you need to know – as well as some key phrases to help you on your way!

– The first church built by man is St. Peter’s Church in Antioch (Antakya)
– You’ll find two of the seven wonders of the ancient world in Turkey – Ephesus in Selçuk and Halicarnaus, in Bodrum
– According to the legend, Noah’s Ark landed on Agri Dagi (Mount Aratat) in Eastern Turkey~
– The famous Trojan wars took place in Western Turkey and the Trogan horse rests there today
– Istanbul is the only city in the world which is built on two continents – Europe and Asia
– The ancient psidian city of Termessos (Antalya) is the only place Alexander the Great couldn’t invade because of its altitude – and is highly recommended for a day trip

Culture

– It’s best to avoid beachwear or anything too revealing when you’re not on the beach
– When visiting religious areas, women are advised to cover up in a long sleeved top, long skirt/trousers and a scarf of hat

– Hello – Merhaba (pronounced Mare-ha-ba)
– Thank you – Teşekkür ederim (pronounced Te-sh-qu-err ed-err-im)
– Goodbye (when leaving) – Hoşçakal! (pronounced Hosk-cha-kal)
