Down a short track you find the Thanos Resort, run by Stavros and his wife Maria and family. This resort has a lovely swimming pool, shop, taverna and only 5 minute walk from a beautiful beach. The only bus route is 4 mins away, taking you from Koukanaris to Skiathos Town for a couple of quid. In the town plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, and of course the biggest yachts! You can stop off anywhere along the bus route and find a beautiful quiet beach, all with their own tavernas and sometimes a loo. Hire a quad bike or moped and explore the mountains on the North side, which is mainly uninhabited, except for a couple of monasteries and some goats. Again, beautiful beaches, although the sea is more choppy, but again, tavernas are on every beach.

Useful Tips:

August is Greek holiday time, so don't miss the beach discos on the North side, buses run from 4pm til 1am from Skiathos Town. Food and drink are fairly cheap, although some hotels are expensive. You must try a Giros Pitta, enough for lunch and only £2, available from most places. Monasteries definitely worth a visit - our kids amused by a Monk with a mobile phone! Skopelos boat trips are easy to find, but avoid the new harbour and go round the corner to the old harbour in Skiathos Town, as far cheaper. Again, old harbour has the same food for less money, but to be honest, we never felt we were being ripped off - what you pay in one place is generally what you will pay everywhere, exceptions are the bar on the harbour island (by the open air theatre) and one beach taverna on the north side. Kastro, the old main town is a lovely but windy walk, but mind the loo - its just a hole in the ground and can be quite smelly! Don't forget, loo paper goes in the bin - not the loo!

Skiathos is a scintillating, romantic, idillic piece of Greece at its best. Find a quiet beach where you can whine away the hours watching the ocean gently lapping against the soft sandy shore. Swim in the warm clear blue water or do some exploring on foot and discover nature at its best. Alternatively head for town where you can join the bustling streets full of shops bars and eateries. The locals are very welcoming and eager to please, offering a taste of local food and wine to get you in the mood. Spend a romantic candlelite evening overlooking the ocean or join one of the many local bars offering music and entertainment. Wander through the old cobbled streets stepping back in time where churches tower above the bustle below. When the sun rises you ready to do it all again.

Useful Tips:

Everything.......Don't miss anything on this magical island. Talk to the locals and make new friends particularly the ones that have visited before ( you'll meet plenty of those). Make sure you visit the monestery just outside town it's a fabulous place and the monks are usually around. It has beatifull courtyard filled with flowers and lots of exotic birds not forgetting to mention the proverbial cats that live in too. Take a visit to Xanemos beach just outside the town . For pet lovers you can visit the animal sanctuary and if you like you can take one of the very well looked after dogs for a nice stroll. make sure you have a wander on the Bourtsi, it's the small piece of island jutting out from the corner of the Old and New Port. There's a cafe' at the top and you can sit and look at the fantastic view across to Skopelos. Don't forget to take at least one boat trip from the port or for the more adventurous why not hire your own little boat for a day. Don't miss any opportunity.

Skiathos is a lovely haven to holiday. The beaches are great and Skiathos Town has something for everyone, young and old. Beautiful restaurants with fantastic food. The Windmill on the top of the hill is a special Restaurant to visit and has a good menu. A boat trip around the Island or to Skopolos is a must, the weather is great. I have never heard anyone who does not like this Island. Kanapista is the resort we like the best, we stay at the Plaza Hotel, very Greek but very friendly.

Useful Tips:

All the lovely scenery, its beautiful. Kanapista is a great place to stay and you can get a boat taxi to Skiathos Town.

We would never have thought of going to Skiathos - we haven't really done the beach holiday before. But whilst being blackmailed into watching 'Mamma Mia' I did concede that the location looked fantastic - and a little internet exploration later, we found the destination was Skiathos. It turned out to be an inspired choice. The first thing you notice about the Islands is the amazing colour and cleanliness of the sea and sandy beaches. And there are so many coves and beaches to discover, varying from the busy popular ones to virtually deserted nooks, easily found on the bus routes or by hiring a scooter as we did. The people are so friendly, and the atmosphere so relaxing. I found myself really relaxing, and just to think - its all because of the Mamma mia film. Thanks Meryl, I owe you one.

Useful Tips:

Follow the Mamma Mia trail and you will see all the locations on the film. Take a short ferry hop over to Skopelos, where most of the filming was done, and you can even go and see the church from the final scene. Its quite a climb, but worth every step when you get to the top.
