Comments:
Lively nightlife but not OTT. Beach is slightly coarse and rocky. Not overdeveloped.
Useful Tips:
If you rent a quad bike, it IS against the law to ride without a helmet but the hire firm may tell you otherwise. We saw several people pulled up for not wearing them and all the hire companies were saying it's not necessary. The police are very strict in Crete. Don't push your luck. Well worth hiring the quad's though so that you can get around and enjoy the sights plus you can get places where cars can't.

Comments:
We've been to Hersonissos twice now with On the Beach Holidays and had a fantastic time. Last year we were a little nearer to Malia, but took a 5 minute bus journey to Hersonissos town. I was with my four kids ranging from 12 - 19, and there was something for all of us. Hersonissos town has loads of shops, a cinema, beach clubs, crazy golf, lots of bars, but also good walks along the coast. Just up the hill is 'real' Greece with the lovely old village with beautiful windy little lanes, fantastic restaurants and high class souvenir shops. The best restaurant has the girls dressed in Ancient Greek costumes and food is served on silver platters! The weather has been great both years (we went in August each time) and all the people were friendly and welcoming. Both apartments we stayed in were clean, and beautiful with lovely pools. If you're after a relaxing, easy seaside holiday this is a perfect destination, but a car would be good to explore the island to its full potential.
Useful Tips:
Beaches are not huge, so get there early if you want a decent place. Definitely get up the hill to the old villages, try a boat trip too - it's great to swim off the boats in the clear blue sea.
