Santo Domingo Holidays

The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo offers the cosmopolitan buzz of city life along with the turquoise sea views expected from a Caribbean holiday. Situated on the country's south coast, Santo Domingo holiday's are a great way to see the Dominican Republic at its vibrant best with an array of fine restaurants, bars and shops combined with the glorious all year round climate and white picture postcard beaches, are an ideal way to experience the Caribbean.

Reaching Santo Domingo has never been easier now that the second newly built airport is fully functional with flights leaving the UK on a daily basis. So what are you waiting for? Take advantage of On The Beach's unrivalled deals and book your Santo Domingo holiday today!

Weather

Undoubtedly one of the Dominican Republic's biggest draws is its superb climate. With temperatures reaching into the late twenties throughout the year, it seems your tan will improve whenever you visit! What's more, the warm winters are the perfect way to escape the cold, wet British alternative, and avoid the crush of the summer holidays!

Things to do

Santo Domingo holidays are packed with things to do to suit everyone's needs. No holiday in Santo Domingo is complete without a visit to the Colonial City, reported to be the first city of the New World built by European settlers. This is a great place to see the country at its most authentic, and museums such as Museo de las Casas Reales provide a fascinating insight into 15th and 16th century life. Elsewhere, highlights include the Caribbean's largest Botanical garden, as well as the must see Natural Aquarium, particularly useful for families. And for those who are feeling particularly lazy, there's always the beautiful stretch of coastline perfect for a day's bronzing!

Nightlife

As a capital city, Santo Domingo is perhaps the liveliest of all Dominican Republic resorts. Most of the clubs and bars are located in groups, such as around the Avenida Abraham Lincoln, and range from merengue and salsa dancing to rock music. And no party goer's holiday would be complete without a trip to the Guacara Train, a multi-level, underground nightclub located in an enormous cave in the Mirador del Sur Park - a unique experience!

Landscape

Santo Domingo holidays would not be complete without a day (or seven!) on the beach. Boca Chica is the closest and by far the most popular, however often best avoided on weekends when it is inundated by locals. The more adventurous amongst you may want to travel along the coast a little, where more secluded beaches offer a chance for exploration of the many hidden caves and cliffs along the way.

History

The island of Hispanolia which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti was occupied by the Tainio Indians before Christopher Columbus brought his fleet in 1492, and it was his brother Bartholomew who founded Santo Domingo six years later. In 1884, after a pillaging from Francis Drake and invasion by the French, the city and the country gained independence, only to be almost completely destroyed by a tropical hurricane in 1930, its redevelopment concluding in the city which stands today.

Culture

The Dominican Republic's love for music and passion is never more prominent than in Santo Domingo, in particular during the Festival, which takes place throughout February and March each years. The flamboyant street parties and shows are a great way to see the city at its liveliest and are generally a great day out for the family. The Colonial City is the best place for a cultural insight into the country's rich history and is a definite must see, and the locally owned restaurants will provide you with a taste of the very Spanish influenced local cuisine.
