Las Vegas Holidays

Viva holidays to Las Vegas! It may be rightly renowned as Entertainment Capital of the World, but contrary to popular belief, it's not all gaming and casinos: this is one of the American West's most vibrant cities, no mere pleasure palace but home to museums, art galleries, landmarks both natural and man-made, and much more!

The city of Las Vegas is one of the most impressive the American West has to offer, at night a neon cacophony of the world's finest hotels, casinos and resorts, by day you have the chance to get to grips with an amazing kaleidoscope of pastimes that will provide something for everyone. And thanks to the wonders of modern technology, your holiday in Las Vegas is just 11 hours' flight away!

Weather

From early spring to October, Nevada basks in weather around 20°C, and in the summer months expect highs nearing 30°C. The desert city receives precious little rainfall thanks to the shelter of the Sierra Nevada mountains, but the aridity and sunny climate are offset by a pleasant warmth rather than stifling heat, and of course, you're never far from the air-conditioning in the hotels and casinos.

Attractions

Las Vegas holidays truly provide something for everyone: culture vultures can lap up the city's art collection at the Bellagio, thrill seekers can experience the skydiving and Big Shot rides the city has to offer. If you don't fancy being rocketed into the air at 50 mph, there are romantic gondola rides through the heart of the city, and meals in the Eiffel Tower replica that are out of this world.

Speaking of which, why not experience zero gravity and a lunar atmosphere in the city's Space Flight recreations. And while you're on holidays in Las Vegas, you can even go on a day trip to the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon, each vying with the other in terms of sheer size and spectacle.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Las Vegas is probably the world's most renowned, bar none. The city flickers alive with breathtaking vibrancy in the evening, and the world's tourists, gamers and 24 hour party people descend on more bars, hotels, casinos and hyper-resorts than you have ever seen!

There are two main tourist areas: there's the world-famous Strip, home to the giant casinos and resorts that have made the city's name, and Downtown, with Fremont Street playing host to nightly light and sound shows overhead, and bars and pubs aplenty. Remember, though: bars here transcend the flashiest nightclubs in terms of size and entertainment, and although Downtown is the more traditional Vegas experience, there's always live music in clubs such as the Celebrity, with rock, punk and an admittance age of 18 catering to the younger crowd.

Going down the Strip, you'll come across The Mirage, with it's 3000-plus hotel rooms, artificial volcano and giant aquarium, all adding to it's reputation as one of the world's most famed resorts. Taking a tram from here will get you to another wonder-palace, Treasure Island, - or 'TI' - with hot tubs and party bars adding to the spinning of roulette wheels to create an altogether hedonistic cadence. The Strip is also home to innumerable eateries and bars, with some great grilled food at Larry's and fantastic buffets at the Rio on nearby Flamingo Road.

History

Las Vegas, got it's name, 'The Meadows' from Mexican traders who stumbled on the fertile oasis in 1829, en route to Los Angeles. Officially a city since 1911, Las Vegas was originally a dusty railroad town acting as a pitstop for those travelling to the West Coast. That all changed with the legalisation of gambling in 1931 and the coming of mobsters, many of whom were instrumental in building the first luxury hotels and casinos.

Culture

Visit the Neon Museum to discover artefacts from the classic Vegas heyday, or the Natural History Museum: always popular with the kids on holiday in Vegas for it's international wildlife, dinosaur fossils and animated videos of the town's prehistoric past. Mormon religion and culture has been prevalent in Las Vegas since the 19th Century, and some of this can be witnessed at the striking Temple in the north of the city, too.
